An advisory board consisting of the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture (Fonds BKVB) and the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) has selected three research proposals from the 44 projects submitted in response to the open call Studio for Unsolicited Architecture. The three proposals will be developed over the coming months, with the joint support of the NAI and the Foundation.
The first proposal was submitted by Lilith Ronner van Hooijdonk architects and the Conditional Design designers’ collective headed by Luna Maurer and Roel Wouters. Their proposal centres on design research into performative space. As designs for the public space are required to meet a considerable number of new requirements these days, the main focus of their research will be on present-day public space.
In the months ahead, Bureau Shift A+U run by Oana Rades and Harm Timmermans and landscape architect Paul Zuidgeest will be completing their research into designing inner city recreational areas. In addition to exploring the exact programming and design of these urban places, the research also includes developing the required business case so that local government need not bear the full costs of such areas.
The partnership of temp.architecture by Maarten van Tuijl and Tom Bergevoet is the third team to be selected. Together with urban development expert Paul Jorna, they entered their 'Urban Pioneers Zeeburgereiland' proposal, which hinges on researching ways in which vacant and abandoned lots can be used as a catalyst for further short and long term development.
The results are intended to reveal that architecture can play a crucial role in helping to resolve complex social and spatial issues. The Studio for Unsolicited Architecture, based in the Schieblock in Rotterdam, will provide regular updates on the plans with presentations, debates and workshops. The working period concludes with a public presentation at the end of the year. A second open call for the Studio will follow in August and September.
